Carbon neutral distillery

Warwickshire-based Shakespeare Distillery has been certified as carbon neutral after a full-scale carbon dioxide footprint assessment and off-setting programme.

The independent artisan spirit producer is working to minimise its environmental impact and become a truly sustainable business.

Over the summer of 2022 the company employed a carbon footprint data analyst. with the support of the Warwick University internship programme and Climate Partner UK, they calculated their entire CO2 emissions from spirit production to delivery and looked at ways to reduce the distillery’s emissions.

The company had already invested in energy efficient stills and is using a fully CO2 neutral waste management company; they also offer a bottle re-fill scheme.

Shakespeare Distillery established their own kitchen garden where they grow rosemary for gin distillation and are in the process of planting more botanicals, to further reinforce their sustainability credentials.

The distillery primarily uses renewable energy generated by their roof-mounted solar panels and they recently took delivery of an electric delivery van.

Commenting on their environmental achievements Peter Monks, a director at Shakespeare Distillery, said: “We are one of a few carbon neutral distilleries in the UK, but we hope this is the start of a growing number of craft producers who follow this ethos.

“There is still a great deal we can do but we have now started our sustainable journey and already we’re making an impact. The importance of considering sustainability in every business decision around procurement and our operation is hugely significant to us”.

Shakespeare Distillery also won four awards at the 2022 Stratford Herald Business & Tourism Awards, one of which was in the Best Green Business category, which the company is very proud of.

Shakespeare Distillery was established in 2015 and produces small batches of hand-crafted premium spirits including Stratford Dry, Rhubarb Gin, Elderflower & Quince Gin and Mulberry Gin alongside the newest additions, Jester White and Spiced Rum.
