The Warwickshire Gin Company, an award-winning distillery based in Leamington Spa, has turned its distilling prowess to producing three new rums under The Pugilist brand: White Rum, Spiced Blended Rum and Honey Rum.
After going a few rounds with the three varieties, there was no overall winner and we declared a tie.
The White Rum was very smooth, easy drinking and something you could sip all evening, with or without ice, but as with all the rums we sampled, there was no need to dilute with unnecessary mixers.
The Spiced Blended Rum, distilled with nutmeg, cinnamon, orange and all spice, was equally smooth, but left you with a warm glow from the spicy finish; this is another rum that could easily put your otherwise favourite spirits in the shade.
Finally, it was the turn of the Honey Rum, made using rum from Guyana, rectified with orange peel and finished with honey from a local Warwickshire producer.
Before tasting this rum none of us in the office were convinced that this flavour profile would work. But, we’re happy to admit that we were wrong.
There was a subtle sweetness that came through, but it was never overpowering. This was another silky smooth spirit that punches well above its weight.
Established rum producers might not be hanging up their gloves, but having sampled such satisfying rums we’re confident that The Pugilist range will give them a good run for their money.
