When asked if we wanted to sample some handmade Belgian chocolate truffles, filled with a delicious chocolate ganache and Warwickshire Gin Company’s very own gins and rums, the answer was unequivocal: ‘yes’.
The stunning truffles are a collaboration between two south Warwickshire businesses – Warwickshire Gin Company and Dale’s Handmade Ltd.
The gin truffles, made with Leamington on Parade Gin, are formed in a delicious milk chocolate shell decorated with shimmering silver; there is a gold flourish for the Kingmaker Dry Gin and a copper shimmer swirl for the Philosopher’s Daughter Dry Gin.
As for the Belgian chocolate rum truffles, they are filled with delicious milk and dark chocolate ganache flavoured with the Pugilist Spiced Rum, encased in milk and dark chocolate shells, decorated with a hand-applied gold shimmer.
So, they look great, but what about the taste? How successfully had the chocolatiers incorporated the rum and gin?
Biting in to the truffles was a fabulous experience. The crunch of the milk and dark chocolate creations gave way to a subtle hit of alcohol, but never overpowering, as some spirit-based truffles can be.
Each handmade truffle is delicate and perfectly formed, and although they look relatively small they produce a delicious mouthfeel of quality chocolate, which quickly gives way to a smooth spirit – these are definitely not for the children.
The finish only leaves you wanting to reach for what rapidly turns out to be an empty box.
The Belgian chocolate lives up to expectations and the artisan gin and rum was an inspired combination.
Was there a winning flavour and chocolate combination? Sitting firmly on the fence we couldn’t choose between the rum and gin truffles, and would happily order many boxes of both varieties.
The good news is that they’re here in time for Easter and the truffles are also available as part of a gift set, including a glass and 20cl bottle of one of Warwickshire Gin Company’s six gins.
