Hop to it

Sheffield-based Hop Hideout, a speciality beer shop, has relocated to Leah’s Yard, a
Victorian Grade II* listed building on Cambridge Street in the centre of Sheffield; it originally comprised a number of small industrial workshops where the ‘little mesters’ produced high quality cutlery.

The move to Leah’s Yard will enable Hop Hideout to provide even more bespoke food and drink tasting events, from ‘Meet the Brewers’ and wine tastings, to cider producers’ showcases and a host of collaborative events planned to take place throughout the year.

It will also enable the community-focused small business to cater for private events and functions, including birthdays, work events and celebrations.

Community involvement is as the heart of Hop Hideout’s relocation – which was made possible by the generosity of Hop Hideout’s crowdfunding supporters, which raised £10,000 in May 2024.

Commenting on the move to the new premises, Jules Gray, founder and owner of Hop Hideout, said: “We’re excited to move to Leah’s Yard social hub at the heart of Sheffield showcasing the very best in local independent art, retail, food and drink.

“We’re so grateful to all of our supporters who have shown that the beer scene is alive and well in Sheffield. It’s a very exciting time to be opening our own premises once again.”

Hop Hideout was one of the country’s first “drink-in” speciality beer shops to launch on the high street.

After launching as a pop-up shop on Abbeydale Road in 2013, they moved to an adjacent café in 2015. In 2019 the company took space in a food hall, where the business went from strength to strength.

Now, with over 200 beers to choose from, in a wide variety of styles, the independent retailer also now offers a range of ciders, low intervention wines, kombucha and more, Hop Hideout remains one of Sheffield’s top locations for beer lovers to visit.

Jules is passionate about Sheffield, good causes and making beer a welcoming space for everyone. She is also the founder and organiser of Sheffield Beer Week and Indie Beer Feast.

As a member of the British Guild of Beer Writers she has appeared on various television shows, including beer tastings on Channel 5’s ‘Summer on The Farm’ series.

The soft opening took place on 24 August.
