Say it with machair flowers

This year The Isle of Harris Distillery is celebrating Mother’s Day with a new card featuring hand-drawn machair flowers from the Outer Hebrides.

A specially designed Mother’s Day card features the trademark hand-drawn style of wildflowers, which celebrates the beauty of these graceful flowers.

Commenting on these unique cards, Mike Donald, the chief storyteller at the distillery said: “As Mother’s Day approaches, we wanted to celebrate the beauty of the rare and wonderful machair flowers of Harris.

“It’s a beautiful but fragile ecosystem unique to the Outer Hebrides, so best enjoyed with our hand-drawn card rather than hand-picked!”

The distillery will be sharing stories inspired by island mothers and the delicate flora that blanket the machair in the run up to Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day is also known in Scottish Gaelic as ‘Là nam Màthraichean’ and these limited printed cards carry the traditional title in the native language of the islands.

‘Machair’ is the Gaelic word for fertile, low-lying grassy plains; it is a unique habitat and one of the rarest in Europe, occurring only on the exposed west-facing shores of Scotland and Ireland.

With every Mother’s Day gift ordered between now and 21 March 2022, The Isle of Harris Distillery will include a gift card, hand-written with a personal message at no extra cost to give those special women in your life an island-inspired treat.
