Penderyn toasts Bad Wolf’s success

Award-winning Welsh distillery, Penderyn, has just launched Penderyn Bad Wolf – a 10-year-old whisky fully matured in old Tawny Port pipes – to celebrate the tenth anniversary of independent production company, Bad Wolf.

The companies have collaborated to produce a premium whisky, which was personally chosen from the Penderyn warehouse by Bad Wolf’s CEO, Jane Tranter and her team.

Long-term Penderyn collaborator Lauren Tutssel designed the bottle presentation, which for the first time incorporates the iconic Bad Wolf howling.

This latest edition joins the Penderyn Icons of Wales numbered 1 to 12, which have celebrated iconic people’s milestones, or Welsh events, including highly collectable (and sold out) ‘Bryn Terfel’, ‘Dylan Thomas’, ‘Rhiannon’ and more.

Commenting on this unique collaboration Jane Tranter, CEO and co-founder of Bad Wolf Studios, said “There is something characteristically bad-ass and unexpected in marking our 10th year of Bad Wolf by having a whisky in our name.

“I love the idea that while we have been producing hundreds of hours of drama in Wolf Studios Wales, in parallel this ten-year-old whisky has been quietly biding its time, maturing until ready to be appreciated. Great things come to those who wait.”

For Stephen Davies, Penderyn’s CEO, he was equally enthusiastic about the new release: “This is one of the most exciting bottlings we have ever done.

“Bad Wolf has brought huge creativity to Wales and to the capital city of Cardiff, and through the medium of contemporary arts has been telling fantastic stories over the last 10 years.

“It seems fitting to dedicate a 10-year single malt to the company’s 10-year anniversary and raise a toast to many more years of success to come.”

Penderyn Bad Wolf will be available for purchase from Saturday 11 October, from the Penderyn distilleries (Penderyn/Llandudno/Swansea) and available online from Monday 13 October.

Aista Phillips, the Penderyn Master Blender, provided the tasting notes:

Nose: Delicate floral tones drift in first — orange blossom and soft rose petals — followed by the warm, spiced richness of fruitcake.

A medley of red and golden raisins, fig jam, and fresh red berries — ripe strawberries and tangy raspberries — add both brightness and depth.

Palate: A luscious blend of stewed dark fruits and lighter orchard notes opens the palate with richness and grace. Sweet and saline dance in harmony, revealing layers of toffee, marzipan, and bittersweet marmalade.

There’s a remarkable balance here — depth without heaviness, lifted by gentle oak and subtle spice, a veritable pack of flavours.

Finish: The finish unfolds slowly, long and evolving. Dried apricot and salted caramel linger with a dusting of nutmeg. It begins sweet and generous, tapering to a dry, elegant close, that will leave you howling at the moon.

PENDERYN

Penderyn produces award-winning single malt whiskies and spirits at their distillery on the foothills of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park, Wales, UK. They opened two other distilleries in Llandudno (2021) and Swansea (2023).

Distilling in Wales was a lost art, but in the late 1990s, in a Hirwaun pub in the Welsh valleys, a group of friends chatted about establishing the first whisky distillery in Wales in over a century. They dreamt of creating a whisky as pure and precious as Welsh gold, represented today by Penderyn’s ‘gold seam’.

The village of Penderyn was chosen because of the site’s own supply of fresh natural spring water.

A unique copper single-pot still designed by Dr David Faraday, a relative of the great 19th-century scientist Michael Faraday, was installed in 2000, which produces a spirit at an industry high draw of 92%, meaning Penderyn’s whiskies are light, fruity and flavoursome.

With investment, inspiration, hard work, attention to detail, the finest barley, expert female distillers and the best American oak bourbon casks, Penderyn Whisky has quickly gained a worldwide reputation for its range of whiskies, winning over 100 Double Gold/Gold/Masters awards en route.

Today Penderyn is now very much part of the world whisky conversation, and is available in over 50 countries, including key markets in France, Germany, USA and China. Indeed only around a handful of countries were exporting whisky when we began, and now most countries do, so Penderyn really was a pioneer in the world whisky industry.

Penderyn is a privately owned company, with over 60 shareholders.
