Two of the north’s most celebrated breweries have collaborated for the first time to launch a 4.4% stout, Northern Rising.
It took the two award-winning breweries twelve months to perfect Northern Rising, which is being released in casks and kegs across Northern Monk’s and Timothy Taylor’s estates, and in pubs across the UK; it will also be available in 440ml nitro stout cans in supermarkets and online.
The team at Timothy Taylor’s and Northern Monk used roast barley and crystal malt in the brew, described as a malt-forward beer with a satisfying dark chocolate and a nutty caramel flavour.
Golden Promise malt is also in the mix, a staple of Timothy Taylor’s cask ales, which gives the beer that trademark full body and satisfying mouthfeel.
Having read the press release and seen the press photos we enquired about samples and a few days later Norther Rising arrived.
This dark, moody stout, which was an impressive full-bodied beer, was inviting on the nose and a mouthfeel that did not disappoint. Of course press releases want to position drinks in the best possible light, but it is very rewarding when the reality exceeds expectations.
You do get an incredibly smooth, malt-forward beer; the complex flavours include dark chocolate and subtle caramel and nutty undertones. When poured – in our case from a can – Northern Rising settles with a thick creamy head.
In summary, this stout, in our opinion, is as good as any that you might find on the Emerald Isle.
Commenting on this unique collaboration, Russell Bisset, co-founder and managing director of Northern Monk, said: “We’ve been huge fans of Timothy Taylor’s for many years and a collaboration with them has always been on our bucket list.
“We settled on a beer style that’s 300 years old, started in London and made famous in Dublin. We had fun getting together and developing different concepts on what we could do together and landed on a stout, an exciting challenge. Stouts are the fastest growing beer style in the UK and we’re stoked for people to try our take on a classic.”
Andy Leman, Timothy Taylor’s head brewer, was equally delighted with the results: “Northern Monk is a fellow Yorkshire brewery that we’ve been proud to call a friend for many years, and one that has produced some of the most exciting craft beers in the country. It’s been fantastic to blend their craft beer credentials with our real ale expertise to produce Northern Rising, a truly delicious stout.”
This collaboration might have taken a year to deliver, but we would say it was well worth the wait and we can’t wait to try this again.
