Eccentric Spirits brand revived

Award-winning distillers, In The Welsh Wind, has relaunched the Eccentric Spirits range — a series of six distinctive gins and a cask-aged rum, which have been inspired by the influential eccentric Welshman, Dr William Price*.

Dewi Sant Gin

The innovative distillery is based in the village of Tan-y-groes, five miles north of Cardigan on the West Wales coast, where they produce their range of spirits, which includes a ‘grain-to-glass’ Welsh whisky – the first for over 100 years – where the entire production process, including malting the barley, takes place in Wales.

The Eccentric brand, which was acquired by the company in early 2020, has been redesigned to complement their new collection, which includes a range of premium gins, from the cask-aged to the malt distilled; the classic London dry to a fresh contemporary coastal gin.

The six unique gins are distilled with flavours that represent the diversity of Welsh cities and the country’s stunning coastline, and are named after the people, places and ideas that have inspired them.

Black Batch Rum is a new addition to the company’s range, which is spiced with orange, cinnamon and cloves, and rested in heavily charred American oak casks that provide the natural colour and distinctive finish.

Commenting on the new range, Ellen Wakelam, co-founder of In The Welsh Wind Distillery, said: “We  really wanted to be creative and innovative with the Eccentric collection, which is our first In The Welsh Wind collection, yet remain true to the spirit of these gins which already have a following.

“Our aim was to give this quirky but alluring range of gins a new lease of life to complement the amazing blend of botanicals that fans of Eccentric know and love. We also felt a rum would complement the range and bring something new to the collection.

“The collection pays perfect homage to Dr Price, who was the inspiration behind the Eccentric collection. He was a true Welsh eccentric and yet someone who made a difference in Wales. We were attracted to how he lived by his principles in an era where convention was everything. That reflects our ethos at In The Welsh Wind: although we are respectful of tradition we refuse to be constrained by it and will always look to see how we can bring creativity into everything we can do.”

Customers can order the new gins and rum via In The Welsh Wind’s website: and can also follow the brand on social media, including: Facebook (@eccentricspirits), Instagram (@eccentricspirits) and Twitter (@eccentricgin).

*Dr Price (1800-93) came from Llantrisant, South Wales, and his ideas often challenged conventional wisdom.

He was an outstanding scholar and exemplary surgeon, and a pioneer in establishing an embryonic social healthcare system, which is said to have influenced Aneurin Bevan’s plans for the National Health Service.
