Craft cider producer, Gravity Theory, whose excellent cider we reviewed early in 2025, recently sent us two new varieties, Hazy Pineapple Cider and Berry Cherry Cider – both in 440ml cans and the same 3.4% ABV.
The branding of the new flavours feature pen and ink drawings of the dominant fruit ingredient, which the artist has set above hot air balloon baskets, reminiscent of the imagery used to illustrate Jules Verne’s adventures.
As with the design of the cans of the cider that we originally sampled, the new cans are equally appealing, with a slightly rough and tactile finish.
But, whilst the packaging is important, it’s all about the taste, so what did we think?
Both the ciders were delightful; light, refreshing and fruity.
The Berry Cherry Cider was slightly acidic, which produced a lively mouthfeel and finish, but it was beautifully balanced with the sweetness of the apples and the compelling ripeness of the cherries, delivering powerful a flavour profile, with all the ingredients working perfect harmony.
When you think of pineapples you don’t naturally associate them with cider, but the magicians at Gravity Theory have truly removed rabbits from hats.
The Hazy Pineapple Cider is another triumph and a cider that we would happily drink if we were out and about or simply keep a few in the fridge.
Combining pineapples and apples produces another compelling flavour profile; the pineapples provide an indulgent tropical sweetness.
The apples balance the sweetness for a smooth mouthfeel and another rewarding finish.
The growth for fruit ciders is currently growing in the UK at around 4% year-on-year, which bodes well for Gravity Theory’s fruit ciders; added to the fact that authenticity is increasingly important for discerning customers, especially the under-30-year-olds, who are tending to drink less, but better.
We look forward to keeping in touch with Gravity Theory and wait with anticipation to see what comes next.
