In June 2020, Christine and Lee Longden, a couple from Essex, launched their new wine retailing business, The Twisted Cork.
Based at the Tower Business Park in Tiptree, near Colchester, The Twisted Cork offers a range of new and old world wines, including English wine, along with a variety of spirits and craft beers. They also source organic, vegetarian and vegan wines.
One of the company’s main selling points is that they offer products that are not available elsewhere on the high street.
Since launching, the company has been trading ahead of expectations, with strong in-store and online sales, as Christine explains: “When we opened our doors at the end of the first lockdown we had a lot of interest from customers living locally, but we knew that online sales would be important for the success of our business; throughout our first nine months we have enjoyed steadiliy increasing sales and we are very grateful to all our customers for their custom and support.”
The Twisted Cork draws on the combined experience of Christine and Lee, whose backgrounds are accounting and logistics, respectively, and their shared love of fine wine. They deal directly with the vineyards and have plans to visit wine producers across Europe when travel restrictions have been eased, to ensure they continue to stock great wines that are not available anywhere else in the country.
Commenting on future plans for the business, Christine said: “We have plans to put on wine tasting events and courses, which we will be launching as soon as government guidelines allow. In the meantime we hope that everyone keeps well and they continue to enjoy our selection of beers, wines and spirits.”
